Elephant Hair ‘Style’ Adjustable bracelets
In past centuries, tribal elephant hunters made an expandable bracelet from the tail hairs of an elephant. These bracelets were given as gifts & were thought to possess magical powers. They were worn with the belief that the wearer would be blessed with good health.
Growing up in the game parks of Northern Botswana, Peter Hepburn, learnt the technique of tying the traditional style bracelets out of strands of elephant tail hair, from local tribal hunters. With conservation in mind, Peter began substituting elephant hair with sterling silver & gold wire. Now a family business based in Kasane, African Safari Jewellery creates traditionally African-inspired, handcrafted jewellery.
The earrings come in a variety of combinations, including the number of wire strands, the number of knots, and different colours / type of precious metals (Silver / Gold / Rose Gold)
The earrings are crafted out of quality sterling silver and 14k Gold-filled wire. 14/20 Gold-filled wire is a tube of 14k Gold that is bonded by heat and pressure onto a core of jeweller’s brass. The 14 denotes the karat of the Gold used and the 20 denotes the percentage of 14k Gold by weight in the piece of wire (i.e. 1/20th or 5 % of the wire is 14k gold.)
Once bonded, the result is a tube of very strong and durable wire which is resistant to tarnishing because of its thick gold bond covering. Do not mistake gold-filled wire as being the same or similar to gold plate. Gold-filled wire is considered a precious alternative to the very expensive solid gold. 14k Gold-filled jewellery is 100 times thicker than gold plated jewellery.
Jewellery pieces made of gold-filled wire have been around since the early 1900's and retain their beauty and truly have withstood the test of time. Be confident, when you purchase an item made with gold-filled wire, that you are investing in a high-quality piece of jewellery that will last a lifetime with the proper care.
