Elephant Hair ‘Style’ Adjustable Bracelets
Growing up in the game parks of Northern Botswana, Peter Hepburn, learnt the technique of tying the traditional style bracelets out of strands of elephant tail hair, from local tribal hunters. With conservation in mind, Peter began substituting elephant hair with sterling silver & gold wire. Now a family business based in Kasane, African Safari Jewellery creates traditionally African inspired, handcrafted jewellery.
The Lion consists of 3 strands of wire and 2 knots. Please note the choice of colour / precious metal variations.
The bracelets are crafted out of quality sterling silver and 14k Gold-filled wire. 14/20 Gold-filled wire is a tube of 14k Gold that is bonded by heat and pressure onto a core of jeweller’s brass. The 14 denotes the karat of the Gold used and the 20 denotes the percentage of 14k Gold by weight in the piece of wire (i.e. 1/20th or 5 % of the wire is 14k gold.)
Once bonded, the result is a tube of very strong and durable wire which is resistant to tarnishing because of its thick gold bond covering. Do not mistake gold-filled wire as being the same or similar to gold plate. Gold-filled wire is considered a precious alternative to the very expensive solid gold. 14k Gold-filled jewellery is 100 times thicker than gold plated jewellery.
